Esports in Running for Medal Event at 2019 Southeast Asian Games

Esports in Running for medal Event Competitive video gaming has been listed as a proposed medal event for the 2019 Southeast Asian (SEA) Games, to be held in the Philippines.

  • Mobile Legends: Bang Bang is the only confirmed title so far, with one more mobile game, and two each for console and PC, still to be announced.
  • Razer has signed on as the tournament’s official partner and will support the Filipino national team through product sponsorship.

Filipino sports officials have listed esports as a proposed medal event for next year’s SEA games. So far, Mobile Legends: Bang Bang by Morton is the only confirmed game, with an additional mobile title, and two each for PC and console, yet to be announced.

Esports’ presence at the 2019 SEA Games isn’t confirmed yet, however. The Asian Electronic Sports Federation (AESF) needs to submit a formal application for its inclusion by Dec. 7, Channel NewsAsia reports.

Both the Philippines Southeast Asian Games Organizing Committee (PhilSGOC) and the Philippine Olympic Committee have partnered with Razer as an official partner for the SEA Games 2019. The Singapore hardware brand will also support Filipino esports athletes that qualify for the event’s six planned tournaments.

“The sportsmanship and fighting spirit is seen in esports is no less than that of other sports, and we’ve fought hard for its inclusion in an international sporting event like the SEA Games 2019,” said Razer CEO Min Liang-Tan in a statement.

The SEA Games is an 11-country, biennial sporting event, regulated by the Southeast Asian Games Federation with the supervision of both the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA). The AESF, recognised as esports’ governing authority for the region by the OCA, co-organized an esports demonstration event at this year’s Asian Games. It also intends to introduce gaming as a medal event at the 2022 games.

The SEA Games is set to host a record 56 events at next year’s competition. Unlike other Olympic-sanctioned competitions, there is no official limit on how many sports can be contested. This means that, aside from a handful of core sports, host nations are free to include or drop sports. For example, at the 2017 SEA Games, Malaysia introduced to cricket, indoor hockey, and three Winter Olympic sports.
