Here’s a glimpse of Starfield. Starfield is a space epic from Bethesda coming to Steam and consoles later this year. Starfield lets you go on a multi-planet adventure across the galaxy with shooting and RPG mechanics inspired by Fallout and The Elder Scrolls. With Starfield being Bethesda’s first new IP in nearly 25 years, expectations are colossally high. As we wait for Starfield’s anticipated release in 2023, here’s everything we know about Bethesda’s upcoming space-faring epic.
A big part of any space adventure is the exploration aspect. Starfield promises to feature 100 solar systems and over 1,000 planets. Fully exploring Starfield’s would be a monumental task. But with such lofty goals in terms of exploration, Starfield might not provide enough quality or reason for players to fully explore such a vast galaxy. But we’re still hoping that we are encouraged to reach for the stars in Starfield’s exploration. The early days of No Man’s Sky were a disaster in terms of open-ended space exploration and we hope Bethesda took note of what not to do in that one.
Starfield is set in the year 2310 after a bloody Colony War between two of the game’s main factions, the United Colonies and the Freestar Collective. Starfield will probably be a non-linear tale much like Bethesda’s other games like Fallout and The Elder Scrolls. Starfield also promises a variety of alien races to befriend and defeat in the player’s adventures. While we don’t know that much of the story yet Bethesda has announced that the game will feature over 150,000 lines of dialogue.
Starfield will feature a switchable point-of-view with third-person and first-person perspectives, a welcome and familiar mechanic across Bethesda games. At the 2022 Xbox & Bethesda Showcase where we got a glimpse of what to expect in Starfield. The character creator which Todd Howard, Bethesda bigwig, calls the most flexible system yet promises a way to make a perfect character for any playstyle. The game will also feature a robust crafting system as well as the base building across planets which is expected to be an upgrade from Fallout. Starfield will also feature a ship system with dogfighting and customization though the details of this feature are yet to be revealed Howard did give nods to the beloved games, FTL and MechWarrior for inspiration.
With a robust character creation system, branching story, and a lot of lore and world-building to be enjoyed, Starfield is using many mechanics from its smorgasbord of successful games. ‘A lot of the things that older hardcore RPGs, something we used to do, doing those again in a new way.’ said Todd Howard about Starfield. People loved Fallout and the Elder Scrolls for a reason and we are all for it whenever Bethesda plays to its strengths. Don’t fix what ain’t broken!
Bethesda and SpaceX actually worked together to better the authenticity of Starfield’s space science and story. Todd Howard actually toured the SpaceX Headquarters for research and inspiration with Elon Musk’s blessing. The technology used in Starfield’s lore will be based upon reality and we can’t wait to see the fruits of their labor next year. Maybe Starfield can even inspire Elon Musk to kickstart reality’s Space Age.
