Ragnarok-inspired Games

Popular culture nowadays is obsessed with everything Norse and Ragnarok-inspired games are here to stay. Everyone loves Vikings and the pantheon of gods that they worshiped. There are multiple TV shows, movies, and video games that depict the stories of legendary Vikings of old like Ragnar Lothbrok and Leif Eriksson. Thor, Loki, and Odin are some of the most popular gods around. Interestingly as with all mythologies from different cultures, the Norse kind comes with an over-the-top apocalypse called Ragnarok. There are variations of how it goes but basically, the gods, the giants, and the humans will engage in an ultimate battle royale that culminates with the destruction of all things.

While there are multiple games that contain elements from Norse mythology, we’ll be looking at some of the most iconic ones that tell of Ragnarok. From MMORPGs to open-world action games, here are some of the best games that feature the Ragnarok apocalypse to some extent:

Ragnarok Online

Ragnarok Online was first released back in 2002 and became the gateway for many gamers to the wonderful and weird world of MMORPGs. This may be the oldest game on this list but Ragnarok Online isn’t any less relevant. The game is set in the world of Midgard and based on the popular manhwa of the same name by  Lee Myung-jin. Mythology figures such as Loki and Fenris Fenrir, a powerful wolf in Norse culture, play significant roles. The main character in the manhwa is Chaos, a knight who is said to be the reincarnation of Balder. Your adventures in the world of Ragnarok Online is an homage to both the manhwa and the Norse lore it is named after.

God Of War

The latest game in the series features an older Kratos alongside his son, Atreus, in old Scandinavia. In true God of War fashion, the father and son duo have a chance encounter where the Norse gods start to take an interest in them. Odin and Thor are given the spotlight alongside some more minor figures in the mythology. Interestingly, Loki is not shown or mentioned in the first iteration of the reboot. While in the first game, Ragnarok is not a key factor but the world snake Jormungandr still lives but its demise is foretold. The 2nd game which is due sometime in 2022, God of War: Ragnarok will surely have a much more chaotic and apocalyptic adventure in store for the Kratos and Atreus. Now that’s another one of Ragnarok-inspired games.

God of War is available on PlayStation and PC. Buy PSN Gift Cards (or Steam Wallet Codes) on Wallet Codes now to experience the world of God of War and immerse yourself in some Ragnarok action-filled play.

Valheim

One of the best Ragnarok-inspired games is Valheim. Valheim is an open-world crafting survival game that took the gaming world by storm in early 2021. Featuring a vast world with different biomes you could explore with your friends, Valheim was a perfect choice to play when everyone was mostly stuck at home during that time. According to Norse mythology, Valheim is the 10th world within the world tree, Yggdrasil. In the game, you play fallen Vikings who must craft shelter and weapons to survive in its unforgiving world. You must then find a way to defeat all of the world’s bosses and survive this game’s personal take on Ragnarok.

Assassin’s Creed Valhalla

Assassin’s Creed Valhalla is the biggest game yet from Ubisoft’s storied franchise. This time around the original game has you playing as Eivor a Viking during the Sons of Lothbrok’s invasion of England and the forces of King Ælla and the other Petty Kings of England. While the game does draw a large amount from Norse lore, it is in the game’s latest DLC that provides a high dose of Ragnarok goodness. In Dawn of Ragnarok, you actually play as the All-Father himself, Odin. As Odin, you must slay the giants anew as he seeks to rescue his beloved son, Baldr, from the clutches of the fire god Surt.

Banner Saga

The Banner Saga trilogy of games takes place in a vast world based on Norse mythology. A monstrous race known as the Dredge seeks to end the world and is this game’s own version of Ragnarok. You take control of multiple characters as they command a caravan and try to survive in these dark times. Your choices matter as you make tough decisions throughout all three games. The core of the gameplay, however, is the tactical grid-based combat where you must weigh every action carefully if you hope to win against the odds stacked against you. The smooth style and gripping story (a Ragnarok-inspired game indeed) make these games a must-play even if you aren’t a fan of Norse mythology.
