Zombie modes have come to be part of the Call of Duty formula throughout the years. The most recent game in the franchise, Call of Duty: Vanguard is no different and comes with a bloody good zombie mode called Der Anfang to play with your friends or solo if you are feeling masochistic.
The Der Anfang mode changes things up from the usual zombie mode we’ve come to know and love from the Call of Duty series. The revamped mode places you in the role of a soldier stuck in the ruins of Stalingrad as you (and your friends) try to survive the onslaught of zombies. The round-based style of previous Call of Duty zombie modes has been removed entirely so this is a fresh take on the proven formula. You use the iconic Fountain Square of the city (the spawning point of the whole game mode) as the base of your operations in a huge map with dangers at every turn.. You can play the game your way by going for different objectives or just trying to survive in true horde fashion.
To help you slay zombies with style in the new mode, here are some tips that will start you off nicely:
Loadouts Save Lives
Source: Call of Duty
As you play the game, the weapons and upgrades available to you will also change and one should adjust to their playstyle accordingly. If you like rapid fire rifles or getting up and close shortguns, you can play Der Angang your way.
Artifacts are also a new addition to the mode. Fortunately, there are only four so it shouldn’t be too hard picking out one that works for you:
Energy Mine: The Dragon of Saraxis spawns an Aethereal explosive, dealing massive damage to enemies who set it off.
Aether Shroud: The Mask of Bellekar cloaks you in Dark Aether, masking your presence from enemies for five seconds.
Ring of Fire: The Sword of Inviktor sparks a ring of Aethereal flame to boost damage for anyone within its radius for 15 seconds.
Frost Blast: The Horn of Norticus summons a frigid vortex, damaging enemies with the initial blast and slowing those that enter.
Unlike the previous Call of Duty zombie games, getting new guns isn’t as simple as buying them off the wall but with the mystery boxes and chests available in the game. New weaponry may also drop from difficult enemies in the latter stages.
Vanguard’s Zombie mode gives the players a lot of freedom and we hope Call of Duty takes these adjustments moving forward.
Go For The Sacrificial Hearts
When you first arrive at Fountain Square, you’ll notice a number of different portals. Each one will lead to a different mission with its respective objective. Completing these missions will reward you with Sacrificial Hearts that allow you to get new buffs known as Covenants. The Covenants are a worthwhile investment of your time so you should definitely go for the objectives on top of the zombie killing.
Ammo Gremlin: Stowed weapons refill ammo from stock automatically.
Brain Rot: Chance to turn enemies to your side.
Cryofreeze: Chance to slow enemies.
Cull the Weak: Deal more damage to slowed or stunned enemies.
Dead Accurate: Consecutive hits on the same enemy do more damage.
Death Blow: Critical kills return bullets to the clip.
Mother Lode: Chance to keep Equipment after using it.
Resurrectionist: Revive allies faster.
Splatterfest: Enemies killed by explosions may explode.
Unholy Ground: Deal more damage while stationary.
Depending on the guns and who you’re with in your squad, picking the right Covenant should always be given some proper thought.
Zombies Perk Me Up
You can’t have a Call of Duty Zombie mode without perks. The first sip is free, but you’ll need lots of essences to upgrade up through the next three tiers. For newer players, head through the southwest-facing portal to find the objective that grants access to Fiendish Fortitude. The perks available in the game include Diabolical Damage (increase critical damage), Venomous Vigor (increase health regen speed), Aethereal Haste (faster movement speed) and Fiendish Fortitude (base health increase).
