Saddest Video Games Stories

Let’s talk about some of the saddest video games stories.

Most of the time video games are about having fun. High octane action or epic stories about saving the world. But that’s not the only thing people play video games for. Sometimes people want a gut-wrenching story where tears are shed and emotions are reawakened. So here are some of the best video games in recent times that allow you to live vicariously.

SPOILER WARNING AHEAD.

Last of Us

Naughty Dog’s The Last Of Us games were modern masterpieces. The game used the well-honed third-person shooting and up-and-close fisticuffs mechanics from Uncharted to make Last of Us a truly memorable action-driven experience. While Uncharted used a lot of humor in its storytelling, Last of Us used a lot of heart and grit. In the first one, Joel starts the game by losing his daughter to the outbreak and is pushed to questionable decisions afterward. In the second one, the two main characters Ellie and Abby go to extremes in their quest for vengeance. The games really make you question if humans are more monstrous than zombies.

To The Moon

This pixel game is a bittersweet storytelling gem of out-of-this-world proportions. To The Moon tells the story of a dying man who wants to fulfill his final wish to, well, go to the moon. It never is divulged why the man is doing everything he can to fulfill his dying wish but that’s what playing the game is for. He employs the help of doctors to enlighten his past and the revelations are quite the emotional rollercoaster.

Telltale’s The Walking Dead

Telltale’s The Walking Dead hit the mark in this choice-driven game. The game follows the story of young Clementine and her guardian, Lee. The game features a total of 4 seasons and a couple of spin-offs. You see Clementine grow from an ignorant child into a battle-hardened survivor through the years. How you shape her decisions throughout the years determines the type of person that she becomes. A lot of tear-jerking moments and hard decisions make Telltale’s Walking Dead totally deserve to be on this list.

Red Dead Redemption 2

Red Dead Redemption 2 is an excellent game set in the late 1800s of America. You play Arthur Morgan, a gang member, on the run from the law.  The frontier of the wild, wild west is an unforgiving land and Arthur is a man trying to change his ways after his dishonorable past. Arthur gets tuberculosis during the game which is considered fatal during that time in history and starts to reminisce about his mortality and his actions. He even finds religion with the help of a nun along the way. The saddle is bumpy and full of emotions in Red Dead Redemptions 2.

Emily is Away Trilogy

This throwback to older instant messaging apps is a cathartic trip to the distant past. The Emily Is Away tackles first love in a truly relatable fashion via the art style and the medium of the storytelling which utilizes AOL style messaging to modern Facebook. It’s a simple text-based adventure that delivers all the feels as you try to get close to your classmates Emily and Evelyn. You feel the intimacy, the angst, and the devastation that comes with first love and Emily Away delivers on many angles.

Valiant Hearts: The Great War

Unlike most stories about World War I and II, Valiant Hearts: The Great War tells a war story without any bloodshed. The plot revolves around letters written during the war and follows the journey of four different characters who help reunite a German soldier with the love of his life. Despite the lack of a graphic portrayal of blood, Valiant Hearts still portrays the brutality of war and the misery that comes with it very well. It even tackles love, friendship, sacrifice, and survival as well.
